Ryoanji Temple (also known as Ryoan-ji), has Japan’s most famous zen rock garden! Originally designed for and used by a rich aristocrat during the Heian Period, the site was later converted in 1450 into the Zen temple we know today which belongs to the Japanese Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.

Despite its fame, Ryoanji rock garden is still a mystery as to its construction date, who designed it as well as the real meaning behind its design. Some believe that the rock garden represents a tiger carrying cubs across a pond or of islands in a sea. Others claim that this rock garden represents an abstract concept like infinity.
One thing is certain, however, due to its unique design viewers will never be able to see all of the rocks at the same time, as at least one of the rocks is always hidden from the view.
